Ihya Ramadhan (23) 1436 H : Book of Fasting
Sahih al-Bukhari:
Narrated 'Talha bin 'Ubaidullah:
A bedouin with unkempt hair came to Allah's
Messenger (pbuh) and said, "O Allah's Messenger (pbuh)! Inform me what
Allah has made compulsory for me as regards the prayers." He replied:
"You have to offer perfectly the five compulsory prayers in a day and
night (24 hours), unless you want to pray Nawafil." The bedouin further
asked, "Inform me what Allah has made compulsory for me as regards
fasting." He replied, "You have to fast during the whole
month of
Ramadan, unless you want to fast more as Nawafil." The bedouin further
asked, "Tell me how much Zakat Allah has enjoined on me." Thus,
Allah's Messenger (pbuh) informed him about all the rules (i.e. fundamentals)
of Islam. The bedouin then said, "By Him Who has honored you, I will
neither perform any Nawafil nor will I decrease what Allah has enjoined on me.
Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said, "If he is saying the truth, he will succeed
(or he will be granted Paradise).
Sahih al-Bukhari:
Narrated ' Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said,
"Whoever gives two kinds (of things or property) in charity for Allah's
Cause, will be called from the gates of Paradise and will be addressed, 'O
slaves of Allah! Here is prosperity.' So, whoever was amongst the people who
used to offer their prayers, will be called from the gate of the prayer; and
whoever was amongst the people who used to participate in Jihad, will be called
from the gate of Jihad; and whoever was amongst those who used to observe
fasts, will be called from the gate of Ar-Raiyan; whoever was amongst those who
used to give in charity, will be called from the gate of charity." Abu
Bakr said, "Let my parents be sacrificed for you, O Allah's Messenger
(pbuh)! No distress or need will befall him who will be called from those
gates. Will there be any one who will be called from all these gates?" The
Prophet (pbuh) replied, "Yes, and I hope you will be one of them."
Sahih al-Bukhari:
Narrated 'Al-Bara:
It was the custom among the companions of
Muhammad that if any of them was fasting and the food was presented (for
breaking his fast), but he slept before eating, he would not eat that night and
the following day till sunset. Qais bin Sirma-al-Ansari was fasting and came to
his wife at the time of Iftar (breaking one's fast) and asked her whether she
had anything to eat. She replied, "No, but I would go and bring some for
you." He used to do hard work during the day, so he was overwhelmed by
sleep and slept. When his wife came and saw him, she said, "Disappointment
for you." When it was midday on the following day, he fainted and the
Prophet (pbuh) was informed about the whole matter and the following verses
were revealed: "You are permitted To go to your wives (for sexual
relation) At the night of fasting." So, they were overjoyed by it. And
then Allah also revealed: "And eat and drink Until the white thread Of
dawn appears to you Distinct from the black thread (of the night)."
(2.187)
Sahih Muslim:
Narrated 'Abu Huraira reported Allah's
Messenger (pbuh) as saying:
When there comes the month of Ramadan, the
gates of mercy are opened, and the gates of Hell are locked and the devils are
chained,
Sahih Muslim:
Narrated 'Abu Zubair is reported to have
heard Jabir b. 'Abdullah (Allah be pleased with both of them) as saying:
The Apostle of Allah separated
himself from his wives for a month. (His wives said: ) He came to us on the
morning of the twenty-ninth. Upon this some, of the people said: It is the
morning of twenty- ninth (according to our calculation). Upon this the Apostle
of Allah said: The month. may also consist of twenty-nine days. The Apostle of
Allah then flapped his bands thrice, twice with all the fingers of both
his hand (to indicate twenty-nine) and by the third time with nine (fingers).
Sahih Muslim:
Narrated 'Kuraib reported that Umm Fadl,
daughter of Harith, sent him (Fadl, i. e. her son) to Mu'awiya in Syria. I
(Fadl) arrived in Syria, and did the needful for her. It was there in Syria
that the month of Ramadan commenced. I saw the new moon (of Ramadan) on Friday.
I then came back to Medina at the end of the month. Abdullah b. 'Abbas (Allah
be pleased with him) asked me (about the new moon of Ramadan) and said:
When did you see it? I said.: We saw it on
the night of Friday. He said: (Did) you see it yourself? -I said: Yes, and the
people also saw it and they observed fast and Mu'awiya also observed fast,
whereupon he said: But we saw it on Saturday night. So we would continue to
observe fast till we complete thirty (lasts) or we see it (the new moon of
Shawwal). I said: Is the sightidg of the moon by Mu'awiya not valid for you? He
said: No; this is how the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) has commanded us. Yahya b.
Yahya was in doubt (whether the word used in the narration by Kuraib) was
Naktafi or Taktafi.
Sunan an-Nasa'i:
Narrated 'It was narrated from Talhah bin
'Ubaidullah that:
a Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah
with unkempt hair and said: "O Allah has enjoined upon me of Salah."
He said: "The five daily prayers, unless you do any more voluntarily."
He said: "Tell me what Allah has enjoined upon me voluntarily." He
said: "Tell me what Allah has enjoined upon me of fasting." He said:
"Fasting the month of Ramadan, unless you do any more voluntarily."
He said: "Tell me what Allah has enjoined upon me of Zakah." The
Messenger of Allah told him of the laws of Islam, He said: "By the One Who
has honored you, I will not do anything voluntarily, and I will not do anything
voluntarily, and I will not do less than that which Allah has enjoined upon, me:
The Messenger of Allah said: "He will succeed if he is sincere," or
"He will enter Paradise if he is sincere." (Sahih)
Sunan an-Nasa'i:
Narrated 'It was narrated that Anas said:
"We were forbidden in the Qur'an to
ask the Prophet about anything not imperative, so we liked it when a wise man
from among the people of the desert came and asked him. A man from among the
desert people came and said: 'O Muhammad, your messenger came to us and told us
that you say that Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has sent you.' He said: 'He
spoke the trought." He said: "Who created the heavens?' He said:
Allah. He said: 'Who created the Earth? He said: Allah. He said: 'Who set up
the mountains in it?' He said: 'Allah.' He said: Who created beneficial things
in them?' He said; 'Allah.' He said: 'By the One Who created the heavens and
the Earth, and set up the mountains therein, and created beneficial things in
them has Allah sent you?' He said: 'Yes.' He said; 'Your messenger said that we
have to offer five prayers each day and night.' He said: 'He spoke the truth.'
He said: 'By the One Who sent you, has Allah commanded you to do this?' he
said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Your messenger said that we have to pay Zakah on our
wealth.' He said: 'He spoke the truth.' He said: 'By the One Who sent you, has
Allah commanded you to do this?' He said: 'Yes.' He said; 'Your messenger said
that we have to fast the month of Ramadan each year.' He said: 'He spoke the
truth . He said: 'By the One Who sent You, has Allah commanded you to do this?'
He said: 'yes .' He said: 'Your messenger said that we have to perform Hajj,
those who can afford it.' He said: 'He spoke the truth.' He said: 'By the One
Who sent you, has Allah commanded you to do this?' he said: 'yes. He said: 'By
the One Who sent you with the truth, I will not do more that this or less.'
When he left, the Prophet, said: 'If he is sincere, he will certainly center
paradise."' (Sahih)
Sunan an-Nasa'i:
Narrated 'It was narrated from Az-Zuhri,
from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurairah that:
the Prophet used to encourage praying Qiyam
Al-Lail in Ramadan, but not forcibly. And he said: "When Ramadan begins,
the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are close, and the
devils are chained up." Ibn Al-Mubarak narrated it in Mursal from: (Sahih)
Sunan Abu Dawood:
Narrated 'Abu Hurairah:
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) used to
commend prayer at night during Ramadan, but did not command it as duty. He
would say: If anyone prays during the night in Ramadan because of faith and
seeking his reward from Allah, his previous sins will be forgiven for him. When
the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) died, this was the practice, and it continued
thus during Abu Bakr's caliphate and early part of 'Umar's. Abu Dawud said:
This tradition has been transmitted by 'Uqail, Yunus, and Abu Uwais in like
manner. The version of 'Uqail goes: He who fasts during Ramadan and prays
during the night.
Sunan Abu Dawood:
Narrated 'AbuDharr:
We fasted with the Messenger of Allah
(pbuh) during Ramadan, but he did not make us get up at night for prayer at any
time during the month till seven nights remained; then he made us get up for
prayer till a third of the night had passed. When the sixth remaining night
came, he did not make us get up for prayer. When the fifth remaining night
came, he made us stand in prayer till a half of the night had gone. So I said:
Messenger of Allah, I wish you had led us in supererogatory prayers during the
whole of tonight. He said: When a man prays with an imam till he goes he is
reckoned as having spent a whole night in prayer. On the fourth remaining night
he did not make us get up. When the third remaining night came, he gathered his
family, his wives, and the people and prayed with us till we were afraid we
should miss the falah (success). I said: What is falah? He said: The meal
before daybreak. Then he did not make us get up for prayer during the remainder
of the month.
Sunan Abu Dawood:
Narrated 'Zirr (b. Hubaish) said:
I said to Ubayy b. Ka'b: Tell me about
lailat al-qadr, O Abu al-Mundhir, for our companion (Ibn Mas'ud) was questioned
about it, and he said: Anyone who gets up for prayer every night all the year
round will hit upon it (i.e. lailat al-qadr). He replied: May Allah have mercy
on Abu 'Abd al-Rahman. By Allah, he knew that it was in Ramadan, (Musaddad's
version goes) but he disliked that the people should content themselves (with
that night alone); or he liked that the people should not content themselves
(with the night alone). According to the agreed version: By Allah, it is the
twenty-seventh night of Ramadan, without any reservation. I said: How did you
know that, Abu al-Mundhir? He replied: By the indication (or sign) of which the
Messenger of Allah (pbuh) informed us. I asked Zirr: What is the sign ? He
replied: The sun rises like a vessel of water in the morning following that
night; it has no rays until it rises high up.
Jami' at-Tirmidhi:
Narrated 'Abu Hurairah narrated that:
the Messenger of Allah said: "On the
first night of the month of Ramadan, the Shayatin are shackled, the jinns are
restrained, the gates of the Fires are shut such that no gate among them would
be opened. The gates of Paradise are opened such that no gate among them would
be closed, and a caller calls: 'O seeker of the good; come near!' and 'O seeker
of evil; stop! For there are those whom Allah frees from the Fire.' And that is
every night." (Hasan)
Jami' at-Tirmidhi:
Narrated 'Muhammad bin Abi Harmalah
narrated:
"Kuraib informed me that Umm Al-Fadl
bin Al-Harith sent him to Mu'awiyah in Ash-Sham. He said: 'So I arrived in
Ash-Sham and finished her errand, and I saw the crescent of Ramadan while I was
in Ash-Sham. We saw the crescent on the night of Friday. Then I arrived in
Al-Madinah at the end of the month. Ibn Abbas was questioning me, then he mentioned
the crescent and he said: "When did you see the crescent?" I said:
"We saw it n the night of Friday." He said: "Did you see it on
the night of Friday?" I said: "The people saw it, so they fasted, and
Mu'awiyah fasted." He said: "But we saw it on the night of Saturday,
so we will not stop fasting until we complete thirty days or we see it."
So I said: "Is not the sighting and fasting of Mu'awiyah enough for
you?" He said: "This is not how the Messenger of Allah ordered us."
(Sahih)
Jami' at-Tirmidhi:
Narrated 'Abu Atiyyah said:
"Masruq and I entered upon Aishah and
we said: 'O Mother of the Beleivers! There are two men from the Companins of
Muhammad, one of them hastens t break the fasts and he hastens to perform
Salat. The other delays breaking the fast and he delays the Salat.' She said:
'Which of them hastens to break the fast and hastens to perform the Salat?' We
said that it was Abdullah bin Mas'ud. She said: 'This is how the Messenger of
Allah did it.' And the other was Abu Musa." (Sahih)
Sunan Ibn Majah:
Narrated 'It was narrated from Abu Hurairah
that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said:
"Every good deed of the son of Adam
will be multiplied manifold. A good deed will be multiplied ten times up to as
many as seven hundred times, or as much as Allah wills. Allah says: 'Except for
fasting, which is for Me and I shall reward for it. He gives up his desire and
his food for My sake.' The fasting person has two joys, one when he breaks his
fast and another when he meets his Lord. The smell that comes from the mouth of
a fasting person is better before Allah than the fragrance of musk."
Sunan Ibn Majah:
Narrated 'It was narrated from Abu Hurairah
that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said:
"When the first night of Ramadan
comes, the satans and mischievous jinns are chained up, and the gates of the
Fire are closed, and none of its gates are opened. The gates of Paradise are
opened and none of its gates are closed. And a caller cried out: 'O seeker of
good, proceed, O seeker of evil, stop.' And Allah has necks (people) whom He
frees (from the Fire), and that happens every day."
Sunan Ibn Majah:
Narrated 'It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas
said:
"A Bedouin came to the Prophet (pbuh)
and said: 'I have seen the new crescent tonight.' He said: 'Do you bear witness
that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the
Messenger of Allah ?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Get up, O Bilal, and announce
to the people that they should fast tomorrow.'"
