“Guard strictly the (five obligatory) prayers, especially the middle Salaat (˜Asr). And stand before Allaah with obedience.”
— Surah al-Baqarah [2:238]
People tend to follow by example, especially if your brother is younger than you. It may take
some time, but if he sees you praying consistently, insha’Allah it will motivate him to do so as well. :).
2. Remind him Salah is Fard (mandatory)
“What has caused you to enter Hell?” They will say: “We were not among those who prayed (Salaat).”
— Surah al-Muddaththir [74:42-43]
The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said:
“Between a man and kufr and shirk, there stands his giving up prayer.”
“No one keeps away from the prayer except a hypocrite who is known for his hypocrisy.”
3. If he delays Salah, remind him
“Verily, As-Salaah (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours.”
“So woe unto those performers of Salaah (prayers). Those who delay their Salaah (prayer from their stated fixed times).”
— Surah al-Maa’oon [107:4-5]
4. Remind him Salah is for our benefit
Allah (SWT) does not need us to pray, we need Him. He is AS-SAMAD (The Self-Sufficient, The Eternal), AL-QAYYÛM (The Self-Existing by Whom all subsist), AL-WÂJID(The Self-Sufficient, The All-Perceiving).
Salah allows us to remember our purpose, it brings peace to the heart — after all we’re speaking to The Creator Himself! :)
It’s an excellent chance to escape the Dunya and focus on what’s truly important. :)
5. Salah is also scientifically proven to have physical benefits
Please see the article
here for more information.
6. Encourage him to make good friends & go to the Mosque
As per the Hadith of the Prophet (SalAllahu Alaihi wasallam):
“A good friend and a bad friend are like a perfume-seller and a blacksmith: The perfume-seller might give you some perfume as a gift, or you might buy some from him, or at least you might smell its fragrance. As for the blacksmith, he might singe your clothes, and at the very least you will breathe in the fumes of the furnace.”
7. Remain patient and make dua
It may take some time, but if you’re persistent, insha’Allah you’ll see him make progress! Always make dua to Allah (SWT).
